What thread less headset would you use? Note: the head tube on my bike is 1 inch, so I am limited.

miche headsets are fugly. cheapest because above anything else, you won't feel the difference between a $30 headset and a chris king. same thing as formulas vs phil hubs.

hai,
is just a base layer, arm warmers, and a long sleeve jersey warm enough for the winters here? or am i missing a layer?
i guess my question is:
what're good ways of staying warm while commuting/riding in the las vegas winter?
i usually just stack on a bunch of layers of regular street clothes, but that always ends up in me being super bulky, then eventually overheating.
i feel like there are moar efficient, less bulkier ways?
thanks!

merino base layers

Merino base layer for sure. I would forego the arm warmers and just get a ls base layer . Pair that with a winter-weight ls jersey and keep a packable wind jacket and I think you'll be set.

Merino errthing! Street clothes are not wicking and therefore will get soaked in sweat. I have the chrome merino jack and its hella nice, but its thin. Will have to see how it works on a real cold day.

Nick, if you add a windproof layer over that thing, you should be fine.

thanks for the input, roadies. and austin, my parents actually ordered me a rapha winter jersey for my bday, BAHAHAHA.
however, after seeing the prices on rapha stuff, this leads me to my next question:
are there other brands out there that are significantly cheaper that will still get "the job" done?

Post by craig on Oct 10, 2011 15:03:23 GMT -8
NO ONE CAN MATCH RAPHA IN BALLEUR OR ANYTHING ELSE.

Smartwool baselayers are really nice.
I haven't been able to find anything that matches the aesthetic of rapha for cheaper. But there are plenty of brands that do the same for cheaper. They just aren't as elegant.

Dear, Rabbi.
Do you mind telling me about gear ratio? I see people with 48/17, 49/17, or 48/15. I remember my first conversion was 52/15, but had I known any better it would be different. What exactly is the point?

more ground covered in a pedal stroke.

Pretty much that. It's all about keeping your cadence in check. On my 46/18, I can sit at 20mph and spin at about 100-110rpms. It gives me a cushion both ways so that I can keep up my cadence on inclines and not get spun out till I'm at 35mph or so on declines. It's also a lot easier on my knees. Every person is different and you just gotta find your happy medium. High 60s-low 70s on a gear inch chart is usually pretty good for me.

So, should I try different gear ratios to see what I find suitable and comfortable?

Post by nlinealac on Oct 11, 2011 13:42:05 GMT -8
No. Do not explore you gearing options. Pick one and stick to it even if it blows......
In others DUH!

The gear ratio I have is good enough, but I was just curious enough to try others.
