Dear Rabbi:
What are your thoughts on Carbon, Aluminium, and Steel, for use on asphalt. Which of the three would you recommend for everyday use?

Everyday beater fixedgear? Steel, no doubt. Everyday training roadbike? Crabon. No use for a carbon track bike, and aluminum is nice if you're on smooth pavement. There's nothing wrong with an aluminum track bike on the street, but for me, it's not preferable unless I'm wearing bike shorts. If you go aluminum, I would ride at least 25mm tires and a carbon seatpost.

I was only considering carbon because the Planet X is in the same price range as the Bianchi and Cinelli frames I was looking at. Carbon versus aluminium. I don't know, maybe I'll keep thinking. Ghabe, because they just don't understand.
Chris, a carbon track frame is meant to be stiff as all hell. I would actually think it might just as or even more uncomfortable than an aluminum frame on the street. I haven't looked at the price, but have you factored in shipping from england? I know planet x has weird sizing, so doublecheck their geometry sheets if you go that route. I still say quality steel because you can do whatever you want to it and not have to worry about it being locked up. Aluminum dents easily and crabon will explode with no signs of damage.

I hope you are not annoyed by my constant questioning, but I need to know these kinds of things so I'll know what to do or say to others. If I were to get clipless shoes, what size should I get? I looked at a chart and it had sizes for different brands of shoes (none of which you advised for me to get). I wear a size 11 in Vans, but I know shoe size varies.

Josh, Go to a bike shop and try on shoes. Each brand fits a little differently. 11 in vans would probably be a 43.5-44 in gaerne, 44.5-45 in sidi, 44 or 45 in specialized, and 44 in shimano. You're best bet would be to have a salesman size you up, though.

I think it ships from the states, the largest they have according to the sheets is a 58 which may be undersized. Thanks to your input I'll go steel though, maybe a masi or bianchi. I have been looking around at shoes on eBay, but I'm not into anything flashy. I liked those Sidi shoes that are in the Bike Porn thread. I posted it a while ago, but I don't know what they are whether it's mountain or road shoes.

Also, I was curious about cleat position and the variations that some shoes are capable of. You had mentioned to get Shimano SPD or Time ATAC, I'm unsure what kind of cleats match up to the pedals.

Most MTB/offroad shoes have 1-2cm of fore/aft adjustment. Left/right and rotation is in the cleat itself. Without being fitted, a good bet is having the cleat beneath the ball of your foot.
Cleats will come with new pedals when you buy them.

I have the option of buying the full set for Sugino 75 (Bearing, cups, axle, etc.) but I 'm not sure how often I would have to do maintenance.

For the price, I'd go sram. Unless you're getting a killer deal on the 75s, you can buy new omniums for less than the standard rate of used 75s.

Eh, not a fantastic deal. Last time I bought 75s I got them for $170shipped and they had 50mi on them. Consider that you're also gonna need to buy either a new cog or chainring to get your gear ratio where you want it.

I think I'll stick to pedals and straps until January and have a new years resolution to ride clip less. I have found some shoes that are the perfect, but I was wondering what the deal was with the last strap on the shoe. Because there are two pairs that share similar perks, but the last strap is either velcro or zip and clip.

Velcro is lighter and micro adjustable but will strech loose under hard efforts. Clips are strong and wont come loose but weight a bit more. Go with the clip.
