You want the most skip patches possible if you are doing a lot of skid stops, this is because you are burning through your tire when you do them. For example, if you have 1 skid patch that means you are literally skidding on that same place on your tire every time you skid. The more patches the longer your tire will last because the skid will be spread out on more places on your tire. 11/17/19 is good because those generally offer the most skid patches. This is usually true for those cog sizes, but not always depending upon chainring size. For example, a 17t cog will almost always give you 17 skid patches except if you have a 34 or 51 chainring. here is a chart: www.bikecalc.com/skid_patch_calculatorIf someone read "17 tooth cog means 17 patches which basically means the whole tire." and did not realize it was not meant as an absolute, independent, statement, their understanding would be incorrect. come on, chris. we're not dealing with noobs here. everyone on lvfixed knows the 11/17/19 rear cog trick. i understood what you were saying though, which is why i proceeded to give the full statement regarding the cogs. : but yeah, you're right though. 17 cogs will always give 17 skid patches unless you use a chainring that 17 is a multiple of. 34, 51, 68, whatever. and quit trying to pick fights, dude. we're just trying to give mark some input on his gear ratio. I made the comment because not everyone knows everything. We have guests that look at this board that aren't even registered. Just last night Dave and I told someone who knows nothing at all about fixed gears to come here to start doing research. I understood what you said Ghabe, I just didn't want anyone to take it the wrong way. I was not trying to start a fight, if I came off as aggressive, offended, or upset in any manner I apologize as that was not my intent. See you at polo.

alright, excellent. 11/17/19 tooth cogs are different than others. these select prime number cogs usually allow for consistent skid patch patterns.
in other words, if you have a 17 cog, you'll always have 17 skid patches, no matter what kind of chainring you put on. unless, UNLESS, the chainring is a multiple of 17 for example: 34, 51, 68.
so, you'll have 17 skid patches unless you use those 3 chainrings. if you use a chainring that is a multiple of one of these 3, it will bring you to a mere ONE skid patch.
the same basically goes for 11 and 19. an 11 cog will give you 11 skid patches unless you use a 22, 33, 44, or 55 chainring.
a 19 cog will give you 19 skid patches unless you use a 38 chainring.

alright, craig.
anyways.
dear rabbi,
what up with energy gels? i saw you and nick down a couple before the race. legit? do they usually last the whole race/ride? or do you have to down another mid ride? what are the legit brands and what are the shitty brands? do they use real strawberry in the strawberry flavored ones?

gels usually say eat one 15mins before and then every 45mins during activity. it all depends on how much energy you burn, what your glycogen reserves are, and how long/intense your rides/activities are. Some have caffine, some don't. the one i ate on friday was a Gu Roctane that has 2x the caffine and carbs of a regular gel. i will usually have one before a race or a ride i know will be long/hard. the brands i like are Gu, Clif, Hammer, and Boom. IDK about the others, but Boom uses natural extracts for flavors. you really just need to play around with different brands/flavors to see what you like and how you react to them.

Mark, 46/17 and learn to spin. End of story. i still dont get it? I think you're right. I've been stepping up the gear inches recently and found out that I can push out so much more I guess it's about your ability and also more specifically rpms, pedal-stroke, and crank feel(?) to find your preferred ratio

Some people spin, some people don't. I don't. And I don't care to start.

i started off with 52 17 and then a couple months later i switch it to 52 18 and i enjoyed it more and then a couple months later, i was reading up on spinning so again i switch it to a 52 19, and i hated it i felt slow as fuck. so yeah thats why i still dont get it. Maybe rems theory is right i dont know.

You can't sustain longer rides without spinning. Pushing such a high ratio may feel so right, but you're: 1) Wearing your knees out like crazy 2) Pushing too hard, so you won't endure the ride, bonk, etc. 3) Since you most likely don't have brakes, putting yourself at a higher risk. If/when some of you decide to get a road bike, you'll find that you NEED to spin in order to go 70+ without bonking. This involves learning to float in a group/pacelining/managing your time between taking pulls and resting/all that jazz.
Moral of the story: Spinning IS GOOD.

it seems that spinning just means less energy used to push your cranks. so, from what i've gathered, if you can spin, you can ride for longer. and if you can spin well, then you can go just as fast as a high gear.
i assume ~85 gear inches at ~80 rpm is nearly the same as ~70 gear inches at ~100 rpms.
i'll take the latter. spin to win!!!!!
edit: btw, craig. what ratio are YOU pushing?

This is all true but not everyones body is the same. Some people have better anareobic fitness than areobic and vice versa. Plenty of people can go just as far if not further with a harder gear.

yeah yeah yeah, i always look pass that. but you have to agree though. spinning? way easier and healthier for your knees. i'm not tryin to say that spinning is better than mashing down or vice versa or anything like that.

yeah, exactly. all in all, spinning and mashing down are perfect when in harmony. fortunately there's an appropriate way to bring the two together.
