oh hush.
craig, track geometry is essentially to place the rider in an aggressive position on the bike with maximizing stiffness/efficiency. a high bb to help the cranks clear the banking of the velodrome. a steeper st and ht angle places the rider in a more-forward/aggressive positioning. the shorter rake on the forks is just what needs to be done to make the bike not steer like shit when you have a short axle-crown length + steep ht. it makes the bike responsive aka "twitchy;" meaning you can make the bike go where you want it to when you want it to. the chainstays aren't really short, per-say, but the bike has a shorter wheelbase to aid to the responsiveness. people thing a tire that's nearly touching the st is more aerodynamic, but it isn't. and there are also different types of track geometry for different events: omnium, sprint, and tt. omnium bikes are meant for longer events (than a sprint) and are meant to be a bit more comfortable. sprint bikes are as aggressive as they come and very-much uncomfortable to be on for longer than a few laps. tt bikes are for just that: tts and pursuit. the differences are small, but they are there.

Dear, Rabbi
More question(s) on handle bars. I guess the width I ride is 42cm and I was wondering if there is much of a difference if I went smaller in size or not. It feels pretty comfortable riding 42cm, but I also ride 40cm, which is just as good for me. Just curious is all.
Also, is there a weight difference between Mavic Open Pros and H + sons?

What's th difference? 40 is 2 cm narrow the 42. You ride both so what the fuck kind of question is that? Ahhhhhhhhhhh!

I don't have any bars that are 42cm, but someone showed me what I should be riding. I'm thinking about selling my Nitto RB-021 and replacing them with Syntace Stratos or Easton ergo bars.

It says in your first post that u ride 42.

bar width is a preference, but it typically goes that you should ride bars that are shoulder width.
and never, never, never get ergo bars.they are the devil.
and to the rim question,it depends on what h+ rims you're talking about.

Dear Rabbi, Please enlighten me to the reason that the majority of the closet case super heros, rockin' their underoos (aka roadies) are such arrogant douche bag pricks? I find that they never smile, say hello or even seem to be enjoying themselves. It mystifies me to no end that someone would spend thousands of dollars to purchase a beautiful bicycle with all the bells and whistles and then not enjoy riding it. They are riding a bike for christ sake.... and last time I checked, riding a bike is fun. Is it that their junk show has gone numb from that ultra light aero-dynamic saddle? Is it that their bladder is full, causing discomfort and are afraid to smile or say hello due to possibly pissing themselves? Or is it that they are so competitive, that when some guy with a cheap ass bike, cut-offs and a backpack passes them .... their brain melts down like chernobyl. Like I said.. this seems to be the majority, but not all of them. Please humor me Rabbi (or nlinealac who seems to have answers on this thread as well) and put my mind at ease.... or tell me that I am wrong and a clueless prick.
Thanks, Simon

@nick - Ooops, sorry about that. rabbi - Okay. I found some bars that are 38cm and I'm not sure if they are too small for me. I thought about getting a 42mm, but I wondered if the tb14 were lighter in weight than Mavic Open Pro.

SS- Although there are some ass holes, most of us are cool if u get they chance to meet us. Alot of the time i ride my bike it is infact not fun. I'm training. This is often painful and exauhsting and in no way fun, but i do enjoy it. And for the pricks who dont smile or say hello, some of them suck at riding bike and simply cant take any concentration away from riding, and others are just pricks who think they are better than you. I always do my best to atleast smile if someone passes me, I always say hi if they are a younger person on a fixed gear as an attempt to fix our roadie rep........

Josh, 38cm is a pretty small handlebar. I wouldn't buy them unless you could hold them in your hands or test ride them.
Simon, Nick pretty much nailed it. There are probably a few kind of people you see on the road: competitive/racers and recreational/advocates. The competitive bunch are focusing on their training with their eyes glued to their computer and the road in front of them. Breaking stride to wave to someone isn't really their steeze. Everything they (we) do is calculated and one wrong move can send us and whomever we're riding with to the pavement. If we see someone we know, we'll usually just yell out. The recreational/advocate riders are mainly focused on not crashing and hanging out with their bike-buddies. Lots of them can barely ride a straight line, let alone take a hand off their bars. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the reason you're not getting sup'd is that you don't wear a helmet. Essentially they're not going to give you respect if you don't have the respect for yourself/everyone that cares about you to wear one. It's frowned upon and not taken lightly. Personally, I try to wave, talk to everyone I pass, but it mainly depends on what my focus is at the time I'm riding. It might be anywhere from a "good morning," a nod, or a full blown conversation. But if I'm going 35mph in a paceline, the only thing I'm focusing on is the ass/wheel in front of me. Hope that helps. -Rabbi

Oh, and the open pros are about 50g/rim lighter than the tb14s. But, the tb14s are also 4mm wider than the 19mm open pros.

Or is it that they are so competitive, that when some guy with a cheap ass bike, cut-offs and a backpack passes them .... their brain melts down like chernobyl. This is how I used to feel before I raced/realized there was a difference between recreational cyclists and people that actually race bikes. Everyone like this (including myself, at one point) seems to shut the fuck up after the first time they get their ass kicked in a race/training ride.

Thank you all for the responses,
I guess that I am your basic recreational cyclist (that logs a few miles here and there) with a slight hint of competitive nature, but none the less.... I find it funny that most roadies look so unhappy doing something that is suppose to be fun. I do have respect for the training aspect, racing and believe it or not myself.. despite choosing not to wear a helmet all the time. And Rabbi, I do indeed understand what your putting down about the focus and not riding up someone's ass causing a bad chain reaction of events. Please take no offense, but basically I just wanted to stir the pot and ruffle some feathers... looks like it worked.
Put the fun between your legs SS

I wanted to build a wheel set with H+ Son but I may go with Mavic.
Also, are some forks only for integrated headsets capable of being used for regular cupped headsets? I thought about getting an Alpina fork for a later build.

Okay. I just wanted to make sure long before purchasing.
I'm thinking about sticking to H+ Son. I want a deep 42mm in the rear and a Tb14 in the front. Formula 32h hubs, too. I already have the rear.

No helmet = no r e s p e c t bro. I foget mine from time to time So "bro"... just to make sure that were are both on the same page about the helmet thing and respect. Would you say that you and the majority of the roadie community don't have any respect for the majority of the fixed gear community here in las vegas due to 80% plus of them not wearing helmets? And Rabbi...... I will stop with littering your thread and best wishes to you all SS

Don't do it. Same rims front and rear, always. It looks dumb and both wheels will ride completely differently. Unless we're talking an 80mm rear/50mm front carbon wheelset.

Well, that plus running red lights, cutting off cars, and generally not giving a fuck about traffic laws. Most fixiekids give cyclists a bad name.

I guess that's what you get when the youth runs wild......
If you have the time and need some entertainment, check this out.
Why We SHOULDN’T Wear Helmets Urban Velo previously posted this interview with Mikael-Colville Anderson of Copenhagen Cycle Chic and in this TEDx talk he discusses his opinions (err…stirs the pot?) in the ol’ helmet debate.
To summarize his talk, Anderson feels we live in a culture of fear that scares people away from seeing the bike as a rational and safe means of transportation by relying heavily on promoting helmet usage. He pulls from scientific studies and various polls that reference both the risks and rewards of cycling as well as other activities, such as driving and walking. Ultimately, he feels cycling gets the short end of the stick as an activity that is promoted as far more dangerous than it actually is.
I feel some of his assumptions are a little presumptuous and exaggerated (people would stop driving if they knew how statistically dangerous cars are?), but hey, a little rousing debate never set us back. Anderson’s talk is convincing to a point, but I think he’s (deliberately?) trying to swing the pendulum to the equally opposite end of the helmet consideration. As in most discussions, a middle ground is probably the rational practice Anderson is really begging us to adopt. I worry about asking you to share your opinions in the comments section, but hey, let’s keep the pot from getting stagnant.

This is stupid "bro". You probly don't need a helmet cause your a bitch who never goes over 10mph, but if your going to be a real cyclist you need to wear a helmet. I know this cause if I didn't wear a helmet I would not be alive right now. Stop beiing an idiot and cover your head.
