Another question on clipless shoes: do they have to fit tight or should there be a little room? Someone mentioned to me that there should be a little room for when my feet swell from riding.
I'm certain I asked this question and received an answer, but I forgot.

ehh, they should be tight, but not pinching.

wait, so besides the price, what's the difference between the flite100 and a bareknuckle then? bareknuckle is made in italy with deda tubing (so lighter + stronger). better geometry (i think), and more PRON worthy.

What type of steerer shim would I need to fit a 1 1/8 stem? I've seen a few that have different degrees and I have no clue what the point is.

Wait, isn't your stem/fork/hs threaded?

he has a goddamn threadless to threaded converter.

My brain just sploded

I switched out forks, headset, and stem, but I would like to go back to thread less, because it would just be easier swapping out bars and getting my stem parallel to the top tube.
I kind of want ergo bars or road bars.

Also, Craig, do you still have that Specialized steerer tube adapter? If so, I would like to possibly try it out?

In that case, you'll need a 1 1/8" - 1" shim for your stem. What's the deal with getting your stem parallel with your tt? You want to lower your bars or something?

I figured this, but I guess there are different degrees such as +/- 21/13 +/- 20/28 +/- 16/8 +/- 14/10 +/- 12
I like how far the bars go down now, but these are track drops and I may be getting different bars. My bars are pretty low as of now.

You're making this extremely confusing It's either going to be 0, 5, 10, or 15 deg That's readily available. (With -15 deg being closest to 90°. The rest being rises in minor increments) There's also the ones with major positive rise That should give you a drop stem effect
If you have a 1" threadless adapter You may still need a shim for your 1/8 stem

I have no ideas what those numbers are referencing when they are like that. Stems are only +/- one angle. (Ex. +/-17). Ans shims don't have any angle. I would wait till you get new bars to figure out what stem will suit you. Either way, you'll need a -15 or -17 stem to achieve what you want.

This is what came up when I was looking at Specialized stem shims. I guess I'll try and see what happens. I do not have a thread to threadless adapter.

Those are only for specialized stems. And they are also 1 1/8" only.

dearest rabbi, why do you ride such a teeny specialized saddle? I can't imagine you being comfortable on one of those. Perhaps it just fits your sit bones, but it looks like it's too narrow of a saddle for someone of your build.

Do you have any other recommended shim in mind?

Post by rabbi on Nov 10, 2011 14:56:05 GMT -8
A shim is a shim is a shim. Just go to a shop and ask for a 1 1/8" - 1" shim.

yo nathan,
i was curious to what kind kind of tires you use while fixed?
brian uses gatorhardshells. but stephen and craig use ultrasports and say they achieve the same results (durability).
i recently bought a pair of randos, and i'm curious to what you use.
thanks.
also, why are foldable tires more expensive than normal tires?

Gatorskins. I get 5-6000mi out of a pair.
folding tires are more expensive because kevlar/aramid beads are more expensive/time consuming to produce.
EDIT: I've used ultrasports before. They rode like crap and punctured relatively easily. They (f&r) also went square after <3000mi.
I also dislike randos.

Topeak air-morph (or something like that, it has "morph" in the name). Or something from Lezyne if you wanna be balleur.

Ghabe: No offense to Nathan, but me, you, and stephen are a lot lighter than Nathan, so ultrasports won't wear out as fast. Granted, gatorskins are much more durable, they just cost more. Ultrasports are a great value for their cost. And also, Conti or GTFO.

also, why no randos, guys?

they dont need to skid. so randos just slows them down.
