my friend got a bottom bracket and a crank from nu vision for like 90. racing spec and supporting lbs. do it. SRAM, Shimano, or Campagnolo? sam, that is the most general question ever.

Support your local bike shop and buy from them. I have looked at a few shops that are closest to me. BC Adventure Shop, Bike World, JT's Bike Shop.

The Sugino RD Messenger requires a jis square taper in 103mm.
The Shun cranks are similar but be aware of the low quality.
The SRAM Omniums are a very nice crankset that includes everything. Installation of the external bb is very simple. You only need an 8mm hex and Park Tool BBT-9

DUH. nick, you've ridden super shitty bottom-of-the-barrel shimano and last generation's campy record. you have no frame of reference, donny. from the time i've spent on them: SRAM-i can't get into doubletap hoods. hood shape is a preference, and my hands don't like sram hoods. -i tend to be a quick/heavy shifter and you need to focus on how far you're pushing with doubletap. shifts are okay, but going between your large and small chainring can be a hassle. -brakes are okay. kinda spongey. but without return spring in the levers, you lose "snappiness" (if you know what i mean by that). -good weight to cost ratio and rival is a bargain. -servicable, but expensive to do so. Campy-by far the most comfortable hoods. -shifts are clean and crisp. you can really trim your front derailleur with the multiple clicks of the front shifter. shifting from the drops can be a hassle when you're not used to it or have short/not flexible thumbs. it's also nice, but pretty unnecessary, that you can drop 5+ gears at once. -brakes are okay. rear single-pivot is kinda outdated and provides less stopping power. -by far the priciest gruppo you can own (when getting into 11spd. 10spd is cheaper, but what's the point?). however, it is completely serviceable. -weight is meh. not as light as sram. Shimano-i like the hood shape a lot. comfortable from many hand positions. -by far the best/most positive shifting. shimano has their pin/ramping system down. -since the lever and shifter are one in the same, some people experience "ghost shiting" while engaging the brakes. just pull the levers straight and you won't have that problem. -by far the best braking. when magazines do tests for lightweight brakes, they throw in a pair of shimano brakes and they still get the vote for best brake, added weight and all. -stiffest crank on the market -priced between sram and campy. servicable for the most part. -heaviest of the three. but only like a 200g dfference betwen red and dura ace. most of it has to do with shimano not using a carbon crank. i ride ultegra 6600 right now, but will be making the switch to 6700 or maybe 7900. i have a bianchi road frame i'm thinking about putting 10spd veloce on it with a conversion cassette so i can use the wheels i have.

Shimano carbon cranks are coming! I has excite! Don't forget shimano Di2. Eliminates cable stretch, is quick and precise, and you never have to adjust the front derailluer. It's baddest of asses. Tried it on the '11 pinarello dogma and I creamed. Alloverthebike.

i can't remember. i want to say trek, but i remember it being a silver bike with shark teeth decals on it. sounds pretty dumb but it looked amazing.

di2 is awesome, but unless this kid has $4000 to drop on a gruppo, it's kinda out of the question. i wish i had $4000 to drop on a complete bike. and carbon shimano cranks will be cool, but nowhere as stiff as their alu counterpart.

If you're turning fast, you still can control your line so that you don't hit a pedal. And you gotta be turning pretty sharply to do so.
And also, why the hell are you riding 175mm cranks? Is your inseam 34"+?

Sometimes you scrap. Get over it. i ride 165 on my fixed and wish i had 170 or 172.5. My pedal strockjust seems to small.
