Saying "if a cyclist runs lights/signs, they deserve to get hit" it's not the same as saying "if a cyclist gets hit while running a light/sign, they deserve what they got." There's quite a large difference between the two. I am not an angel when it comes to obeying traffic laws. But in saying that, I also don't just carelessly jet into traffic without assessing the situation. I personally believe that Idaho had got it right in their laws with concern to cyclists and lights/signs.

I got hit by a car once when I was in the 6th grade.
I was riding home from school, which was Woodbury middle school on Sandhill and Harmon. I as riding on a dirt path facing traffic. I was coming close to the intersection of Flamingo and Sandhill, but before I could reach it I got hit by this elderly woman who could not really see over the dashboard. It was the small alley way leaving that 7/11 and there is a very large wall that does not curve or anything. She had pulled out with nearly the entire care on the sidewalk and into the street.
Note: if you were to go by the 7/11 now you may know how this could happen.
Anyway, I had been hit and I woke up in the street on the right side of my bike with my legs and my bike underneath her car. The woman did not get out of her car (obviously she was scared). I pulled my legs and my bike from underneath her car and she had rolled down her window to apologize. I simply said that I was alright, but this other woman ho saw what happened exclaimed, "she just hit you with her car!" My only response to that at the time was, "so?" She had explained to me that what had just happened should be reported and I should get checked out to make sure I was medically alright.
Sometime later, an ambulance came as well as some police cars and it turned into this big deal. They tried contacting my mother, but she was unreachable and she ended up coming by maybe 45 minutes later to pick me up. During the time before getting picked up, one of the persons from the ambulance had asked me if I was able to walk and stand. I was kind of confused as to what he was asking because I was clearly walking and standing, but I didn't realize what he really meant until I looked at my legs. My left leg had this long gash going down the front of my shin. I was somewhat surprised at it, but I did not feel any pain. The person asked what my name was and wrote it on his glove. I have no idea as to why he would do that, but I have no reason to complain.
After the accident I was given $200.00 to cover my bicycle and medical needs. Unfortunately, $75.00 was spent on a new bicycle and I'm pretty sure the other amount of money went towards marijuana, Doritos, and Pepsi.
I apologize, I just got bored and had time to kill and felt this was relevant to the conversation at hand.

alright alright alright.
ø first of all, craig. chris set the mood to sarcasm-joking. so that's where the uncle adolf thing came in. no fucking duh the two subjects aren't even comparable.
when you first start off riding (on your fixe) you don't deserve to get hit. you're naive, you're unaware, your riding is wobbly. it's when you're a more experienced rider, see that there's traffic coming, and still choose to be completely ignorant about those drivers. that's when you deserve it.
ø quazi, you're the perfect example. you run reds all the time. however, you're not dumb about it. you don't make drivers swerve to avoid you, and you don't cause them to slam their brakes. you run a red only when you know it's safe. AND FOR THAT, YOU SHOULD GET WHAT YOU DESERVE....not getting hit by a car.
ø chris. if i got hit by a car in an alleycat by running a red and was put into a wheelchair for the rest of my life, i would be very upset. however. i would understand COMPLETELY that it was MY fault and i got what was coming to me (literally). i intentionally blew the red light with full awareness of the possible consequences. i got hit by a car, it wasn't the drivers fault at all, i deserved it. i'm mature enough to admit that i deserved it. i'm open minded enough to admit that i deserved it.
and don't try explaining to me what's disgusting. what's disgusting is the amount of nice bikes you have rotting in your garage. come to polo soon, dude. i don't want you to fall behind. and i especially don't want to be man-handled at the bench-minor tournament.
ø and to everyone! the "share the road" sign isn't meant to just remind drivers about cyclists. it works both ways. cyclists aren't above the law or more special than cars. all road users follow road laws (not all laws obviously, but the ones that apply). we need to start seeing drivers as equals to cyclists on the road. i'm 100% sure that if someone from lvfixed got hit by a car (again), we'd immediately blame the driver saying how he needs more bicycle awareness, and that he deserves a fat lawsuit. but what if it was the cyclists fault? what if he ran a red and got tagged. no cyclist ever considers that. i've heard exactly one million stories of people getting hit by cars, and the stories sound the same. "the idiot driver didn't see me." or "the cunt swerved into the bike lane." unfortunately, when the roles are reversed, drivers do the same thing to us too. they always blame the cyclist because they think that bikes belong on the sidewalk in their gated communities.
ø anyways, in conclusion. people should be aware of the situations they're getting into. if someone runs a red light, and something happens to them, they're getting what they deserve. that being a traffic ticket or getting tagged. hopefully not the latter, but if it happens, then so be it. he knew what he was getting himself into when he ran the red.
if you want to take risks, then don't be surprised when the steel, 4,000 pound consequence comes speeding at you.
edit: josh. i'm glad you're ok. it sounds like that collision was a complete tragedy. i'm sure you weren't plowing through traffic stops in 6th grade, so you obviously didn't deserve to get hit. once again, i'm glad you're ok and that you're still on bikes after some trauma-drama like that.

I got hit by a car in Colorado, totally got what I deserved. First off, I was biking against traffic like a dummy. A car was turning left and didn't even look my way, and rightfully so, I was clearly in the wrong. Thanks to my awesome professional polo skills I knew how to prepare for impact and avoid nearly all injury, with the exception of a skinned elbow, as I supermanned over the hood. Needless to say, I knew the risk I was taking and I payed for it. Honestly, I should have been hit harder, for being twice as stupid, riding against traffic, busy as hell traffic at that and trying to photo finish past the intersection.

Ghabe, yeah my bikes sitting in my garage is disgusting as I'm currently sitting on a plane on the way back from a funeral and before that I was slammed with work. You know that thing that if I don't do it then I get fired and won't have any money to play polo, or, you know live. That is way more disgusting than your justifying deliberately hitting a cyclist with a motorvehicle and saying you would do it yourself and that they got what they deserved. You have changed your argument from "I'm going to hit them intentionally and they deserve it" to, "if someone is running a red and get hit they took that chance going in". I agree, you run a red light and someone hits you accidentally then you took the risk, sucks, its terrible, but you took the risk. This is far and away different though than deliberately targeting and possibly injuring or killing a cyclist because they deserve it for running a red light which was your original stance.
Should be at polo sunday

Oh and by the way Ghabe, I was just talking to an LVfixed eastside kid a few weeks ago who got hit and said "yeah it was my fault, I ran the red and didn't see the truck"
I have never heard one rider run a red then try to say it wasnt their fault. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I'm sure it does, but by and large my experience has been that when people run the red they don't take the high horse and claim that they are somehow right

ok good, see you sunday.
and my argument has not changed. i'm still with: if i see a cyclist trying to run a red or a stop sign with full awareness that i'm comin in hot, i'm not gonna drastically try to avoid him or slam my brakes. i'm gonna participate in the action that is, "dishing out what he deserves."

I always do the wrong incantation and end up summoning one of the three greater evils, although I one time summoned a lesser, I quickly dispatched it.

yo admins/mods. is there a way to make accessing the pm inbox easier to access and find?
mark just texted me about a me about a pm i sent him months ago, and i'm worried there might be other semi-important messages just waiting to be opened in other people's inboxes. and if it were a priority pm, it would be even worse if it was never checked.
